I have been in the massage business for about eight years. Within these eight years, I have practiced massage on my own, but not as a business owner and I have worked for other people in spa’s and clinics. I have noticed now that I am a business owner I seem to get less tips. When I worked in the spa’s and clinics I did get tips, but the owners would not, which I thought was fair because I am giving them half of cost of the massage. What if you are a business owner, but you are the only employee. You do all the marketing, scheduling, and practicing. Is that work worth a tip or because I am the owner is that not necessary? Any thoughts? Bee Healhy. Bee Happy. Bee Well…..

Hi,
I have worked in several different environments. In a spa setting, I was tipped nearly always, as it was expected to augment the small percentage we received as commission. In a chiropractic clinic, I opted to decline tips, as I felt it wasn’t appropriate for services prescribed by the doctor.
Now I own my own spa and my clients tip me about half the time. Some of my clients that usually don’t tip will tip when I come in on a Sunday or stay late to accommodate them. When people ask me what is appropriate, I tell them that gratuities are certainly never expected, especially for the owner of a spa, but that half of my clients tip and half do not…everyone receives the same respect and great treatments from me regardless! I do tell them that my employees certainly do appreciate gratuities however, but it is always at the clients’ discretion.

I own my own Mobile Massage business and I recieve tips sometimes. When i worked in a Salon I recieved tips most of tht time. I think it should always be the client’s decision, and everyone should always recieve the same excellent service & treatment.
I think if you do it because of your personal love for it and passion as opposed to doing for the money, even with the economic situation, appreciation for what we do would be greater.
