“Summertime and the livin’ is easy…” or is it? How do you take advantage of this season, enjoying its special gifts? No matter where you live, it is good to let the abundance and warmth of summertime nourish you. I just returned from a nice, long road trip, traveling from my home in Colorado through several other states to the northwest. The change of pace, the beautiful scenery along the way, and special time with loved ones all helped me to appreciate the true wealth of beauty, family and friendship in my life.
It seems so easy these days to let the pressures of work dominate with never ending demands on time and energy. As a caregiver it is easy to focus on the needs of others, without taking sufficient time for self care. This trip was a reminder that my life isn’t always easy, because I’m not being deliberate enough to make the time to take it easy. Paddling a canoe in Oregon, reconnecting with old friends in Montana, or taking photos of the Teton mountains in Wyoming are such simple pleasures. Easy, yes. And this season is the time to enjoy the things that bring comfort and nourishment.
Make a list of things that nurture your body and soul. What special foods do you find at the farmer’s market this time of year? Savor them now. What friendships or family connections need some attention? Make a phone call and get together. What cultural events are happening in your community this summer? Enjoy a concert in the park.
The list of work to do won’t go away, but the summertime will, so enjoy it now with a little easy living.
